De Tomaso’s revived brand resurfaced in 2019 with the beautiful P72 prototype. However, in the six years since, we haven’t heard much from the Italian car manufacturer about when the production version will be launched. Today, that changes. De Tomaso unveiled the first road-going P72 and promised its delivery by the end of this year. And just like its prototype, this first production model of De Tomaso looks stunning.
The production P72 doesn’t stray far from its original prototype visually, and that’s good news. Its design is inspired by the 1965 De Tomaso P70, a collaboration between founder Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby. This special model is finished in bright white paint with rose gold lines, mirror caps, accents, and matching wheels. The wheels even bear a striking resemblance to those found on the original P70.
The bold lines of the P72 wrap around a single-piece continuous carbon fiber monocoque chassis that extends into the front and rear subframes. No bonding, no welding; De Tomaso states that its chassis sets a “new benchmark” for structural purity.
Speaking of purity, the P72 interior proudly remains free of gimmicks. No screens, no infotainment systems. The interior is just like a cockpit designed for the owner to focus on the task at hand: driving. Hand-stitched white leather and exposed carbon fiber cover most surfaces, while the tactile aluminum gauge cluster and engine line the dash – all coated in rose gold, naturally. This extends even to the exposed shifter.
P72 is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine that De Tomaso claims was developed exclusively for this vehicle. The company previously stated that the engine originates from the Ford Coyote V-8 and was tuned by Roush, which we assume is still accurate. From all accounts, it sounds fantastic. Here, the V-8 produces 700 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque, channeled through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. De Tomaso hasn’t published figures like 0-60 mph times or top speed, but the company notes that the P72 isn’t designed for “ultimate top speed dominance.”
“P72 is our promise to revive a historic car,” said CEO Norman Choi. “The specifications of this first production vehicle embody everything we strive for: mechanical soul, timeless beauty, and a driving experience that transcends modern conventions. This is our echo through time – now made real.”
De Tomaso P72 will start shipping later this year, but the company has not officially released pricing details. However, don’t expect it to come cheap.
